I know it’s a struggle for most people! You KNOW that you should spend time with God, right?
But it is so hard to find the time and motivation for it. And then, at the moment you want to sit down to pray and read your Bible, it hits you! You forgot your laundry or some other duties. So you run away with the thought in your head that you will do it later. But… later sometimes never comes 😉
Honey, I know how it is! I have been there. A few years ago, I listened to Joyce Meyers’ sermons almost every day. She always repeated the importance of spending time with God and reading the Bible regularly. It convinced me and I was determined to spend time with God every day. The next morning, I woke up and opened up my Bible. I read a few verses and got bored. My thoughts ran wild about what I’m going to do this day, what I should wear and so on. As a consequence, I stopped it. This happened over and over again. I tried to start spending time with God on a regular basis. But it was such a huge struggle for me, really!
Before I move on, I want to share with you a little bit of theological background about the urge to spend time with the Lord.
Very early in the morning, while it was still dark, Jesus got up, left the house and went off to a solitary place, where he prayed. Mark 1,35
Even Jesus needed time alone with God. How much more do “we of little faith” need His presence? Only when His power, His strength and His love fills you up every day, then you will see more of God in your life. And isn’t that what we all want? We want more from God; more of His love, more of His plan for our lives, more of His blessings and wisdom.
To get there, you need to have a relationship with the Lord. It can be compared to a relationship with your spouse or friends. You need to talk and spend time with them in order to know what is going on in their lives and to connect with them. It is not possible to ignore your spouse during the week and only talk to him or her on Sunday. This is not a real relationship.
This was the main reason why I started to become disciplined to spend time with God. There is just no other option! When you really want to grow and see more of Gods’ presence in your life, you just have to do it. There is no other way around, no shortcuts!
Next time when you think about praying and reading your Bible, think about the bigger picture. You need to stay tuned to the source. Even Jesus needed to be connected to the Father, how then do we need Him even more!
I started a habit of praying and reading the Bible every morning. Sometimes I spend 30 minutes with the Lord, sometimes 1.5 hours. But I do it every morning. It changed my life drastically! And I want the same for you. I wrote a short ebook where I share with you my best tips on spending time with God. I am sure there are ideas you never tried before on how to start spending time with the Lord regularly and what you can do for a fulfilled prayer life.
