What Does It Mean to Fear God?

Let’s first look at what the Proverbs say about the fear of God:

The fear of the Lord is the beginning of knowledge, but fools despise wisdom and instruction. Proverbs 1,7

The fear of God is one of the big themes in the book of Proverbs. It is crucial in the process of growing and gaining knowledge and wisdom. The fear of God is the only basis on which you can build real deep knowledge.

What does that mean? It is certainly a different kind of knowledge than the subjects we study in school or university. Every person can learn about how things work and every non-believer can study different subjects.

But the real wisdom that comes from God can only be acquired when a person fears God. The Bible is very clear about this. Wisdom sees things through the light of a God-fearing attitude.

David from the Old Testament was also convinced that the fear of God is the foundation of wisdom:

“The fear of the LORD is the beginning of wisdom; A good understanding have all those who do His commandments. His praise endures forever.” Psalm 111:10

So, what is that “fear of God”? To fear God doesn’t mean to have an anxious attitude towards him. But to live in a respectful awe and have a worshipping attitude towards God. This includes gratefulness for all God has done for us and an eye that sees him as our creator and savior. To fear God means to honor him, surrender and obey him in everything. It is less a feeling but more of a lifestyle that pleases God.

I find it very interesting that the fear of God is highly connected with the subject of gaining wisdom and knowledge. Those two go together in order to build a great life. The Bible is convinced that when you fear God you will grow in wisdom and see life through Gods perspective.

The following Proverb says that a woman who fears God shall be praised. But of course, also a man who fears God also gets honored. According to this passage, a lifestyle that pleases God is more rewarding than superficial things. It is highly important that we should actively pursue it:

Charm is deceptive, and beauty is fleeting; but a woman who fears the Lord is to be praised. Proverbs 31,30

The fear of God is a life being lived in obedience to the revelation of his word. This of course begins by accepting Jesus Christ as our savior and to believe that he died for us to set us free. On the foundation of love, we are able to live freely and in a close relationship with our heavenly Father and all the people around us.

In the end, the fear of God captures our entire life. This kind of life is the foundation for a life of wisdom. It is the basis you should build your house on (biblically speaking). Without this obeying, worshipping, believing and God-honoring attitude it is not possible to build your house on a great foundation. You need to fear God with your life.
