How I started blogging

Have you ever wondered why I started blogging and how I knew that it was God’s will for my life? Well, that kind of questions I get asked regularly. That’s why I’m going to share with you how I knew it was my lane, how I started my blog, and my journey so far.

Blogging unites two of my biggest passions. I studied Theology because I love studying and applying the word of God. The second thing I love is writing. Since I was a child, I crafted stories, created magazines, and wrote letters to my many pen pals. I’ve always loved the feeling of a pen in my hand and high quality, empty paper in front of me.

I absolutely love writing blog posts about the things of God. It is my passion, even though blogging is more work than most people expect. You wouldn’t even believe how much time I’ve been spending building my website, writing posts, creating graphics as well as counseling, and praying for my readers. Nevertheless, I wouldn’t trade this journey for anything since God called and graced me to do this.

How I started blogging

Let me take you more than 4 years back, to where it all started. In 2016 not only the world, but my life in particular looked very different from what it is now. I was newlywed, battling chronic pain, and studying Theology. My goal was to capture and process what I’ve been learning about God. I wanted to put my reflections out there for others to read and grow closer to God.

For months, I was going back and forth because I wasn’t sure if I should really start a blog. I prayed about it repeatedly since I wanted to know if it was God’s will and His timing. After weeks of waiting, God spoke to me that he’d have my back. That’s all I wanted to hear.

But there was more. That particular day in June 2016, the Holy Spirit revealed to me that my blog would be translated into different languages. What!? I had no intention of getting my blog translated. All I wanted was to share what God has been teaching me to encourage others.

In summer 2016, I took a leap of faith and created mylampblog.com. It is based on a verse I’ve been living by since I became a Christian:

Your word is a lamp for my feet, a light on my path. Psalm 119:105

The Bible leads and guides me in everything. His word is my lamp and my light in every way and I want it to be just like that for you as well: A bright light, that shows you which path to take in every situation.

When I started my blog, I was full of vision and purpose. I wanted to help Christians grow closer to God. While my motivation went through the roof, the number of people who read my posts stayed low. In fact, NO ONE cared about what I published at first.

Small beginnings

It bothered me that my posts didn’t attract many people. I worked hard on my blog besides my studies, battling chronic pain, and working different jobs. Around one year into my blogging journey, I forgot God’s promise. I let go of the belief that he had my back and wanted my blog to succeed. After putting in hours of work each week, I hit rock bottom. I desperately wanted more people to read my posts and be encouraged by what I wrote.

I thought that I had missed God and that I hadn’t heard his voice correctly. But he kept speaking to my heart telling me to keep going. And I did. I was faithfully sharing what he told me to share, even though I had very few readers.

Little by little people started showing interest in my posts. More and more readers contacted me asking questions and sharing their fears and doubts. I started counseling and praying for people as the Lord brought them.

Over the past few years, more subscribers kept telling me how much my posts encouraged and helped them. Finally, I started seeing fruit in people’s lives because of my daily writings, counseling, and prayers.

How God fulfilled the promise

Even though I live in Switzerland and speak Swiss German, I’ve always had a passion for the English language. That’s why I started mylampblog in English. At the beginning of 2020, God birthed a love in my heart for the German-speaking parts of the world.

Around the same time, Ana from Spain contacted me because God put it on her heart to translate some of my blog posts into Spanish. Since June 2020, people can read my posts not only in English but in German and Spanish as well. Later on, Maria came on board to translate some more of my posts into Spanish. At this point, I’d like to say a public thank you to Ana and Maria for their work. You can’t believe how grateful I am for your support and friendship!

The promise God gave me in 2016 manifested. I’m just in awe because of God’s goodness and faithfulness ever since. I’m so grateful that he continues to speak and work through me.

When I look back today, I see so many things I learned in my first two years of blogging. My English and communication skills in general improved tremendously. God taught me to be patient, humble, and faithful while nobody read my posts. My own journey reminds me to trust God, follow his lead, and keep going, even if I don’t see fruit right away.

Blogging is a lot of work, but I know it’s exactly what I’m supposed to be doing now. There’s this inner peace when you know that you’re in the right place at the right time doing the things God called you to do. It’s one of the best feelings in the world.
