Over a period of time, I was treated very unfairly, but God had my back through it all. Today, I’m sharing the story of how I was bullied at work and how God vindicated my reputation. I pray this post gives you hope and encourages you to put your trust in him.

Every apprentice had a designated employee that taught them how to do the day-to-day work in a specific department. The employee functioned as a supervisor, mentor and a teacher.

As an apprentice, I changed departments every few months. At the beginning of my third year of my apprenticeship, I was appointed to a woman who was only a few years older than me. Let’s call her Daisy and let’s keep it real; she bullied me and was very mean to me.

Every time I made a mistake or asked a question, she rolled her eyes. She told me I should know this by now. Daisy wouldn’t let me talk to customers on the phone because she said I couldn’t do it. Even though I was more than two years into my apprenticeship and had been talking to customers on the phone every day.

And that’s not all. Daisy gossiped about me in the entire office and told them that I’m not able to perform even simple tasks. She went after my intellect, saying I was not bright enough to do the work she assigned me. To be honest with you, it hurt me a lot. I was considered to be a very quick learner. Understanding something new and applying it has always been my strength.

At that time, I was very young, around 18 years old. I was a new believer and didn’t really know how to deal with that situation. Being the youngest one in the office, I couldn’t stand up for myself. Going to work every day was difficult for me, since I felt very threatened by her.

One day, I called in a meeting with the head of the apprenticeship department, our team leader, and my teacher, Daisy. I explained my situation formally, without trying to shed bad light on her. Daisy reacted surprised by my words and she talked in a very sweet voice. She said that we could do this together and she wouldn’t give up on me. I couldn’t believe what I heard. She behaved like a completely different person in that meeting.

After that encounter, only little changed. Daisy was a bit nicer to me and started treating me like a little child. She gave me even less and simpler tasks, which I considered to be another form of bullying.

I was angry at God for not intervening on my behalf. Why wouldn’t he do something about this situation? I had to sit through her treatment for the weeks to come, until I was placed into another team with another teacher.

That time I had an amazing and inspiring supervisor. Let’s call him Roger. He was the most popular employee of the whole department. Everybody liked him. Since he heard some things about me from my former teacher, he wanted to take things slow with me. He gave me only one assignment at a time.

One week in, he realized that I was nothing like Daisy described me to be and he started giving me more difficult tasks. I was so happy and relieved to work with such an awesome supervisor. I wasn’t scared anymore to enter the company’s building because I didn’t feel threaten by Roger. We had a lot of fun at work and I enjoyed working in the new team.

Every few months, all the apprentice had to prepare and give a presentation to our bosses and a few team members. That was one way we were graded. Public speaking has always been my strength and I usually got good feedback. But this time was different:

I gave my carefully crafted presentation and got outstanding feedback, like I had never received before. After the presentation, Roger took me aside and affirmed to me again that I had done remarkable work. One member of the team even said that my presentation surpassed some professional public speakers he had seen. He went on and told the whole department about my performance.

To be honest, I didn’t know how to react to that feedback because to me it was like a normal presentation. I didn’t feel like I did anything special. But I knew that it was God who made them like my performance so much. He used this event to vindicate my reputation.

Vindicate me, my God, and plead my cause against an unfaithful nation. Rescue me from those who are deceitful and wicked. Psalm 43:1

Even though it became obvious to everyone in the office that Daisy told lies about me, what she had done left a mark on me. I had open wounds that needed to heal. The Holy Spirit led me through a process of forgiveness and healing. Praying for Daisy daily, helped me the most. For a while I asked God to do all the good things for her: That he might bless her, show her his love, strengthen her marriage, etc.

I know this sounds counterintuitive, because it is. But you know what? Jesus tells us to do so:

But I tell you, love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you, Matthew 5:44

During that time, I learned a lot. If you are in a similar situation as I was, I’d tell you to do the following things:

1. Trust God and tell him how you feel. Seek him every day and pray your heart out.

2.
