She wanted one for quite a while, and we couldn’t wait for Christmas to give it to her (yes, the parents couldn’t wait for Christmas). On the day the package arrived, she played for hours with her new toy. She was over the moon driving around the living room.

Only a few hours into her game, looking at the package of her scooter, she realized that the same company sold even more toys. She pointed at a small red bicycle and told me that she’d like to have one of those as well. I explained to her that she just got a scooter and should be happy about that. „No, I want the bicycle as well.“ she answered in a raised voice.

I couldn’t believe it. My daughter just received what she dearly wanted. But what was intended to bless her became a trigger. At the same time, I saw myself in her. Isn’t it part of the human condition to wait for something and as soon as we have it long for the very next thing? Isn’t it true that we’re rarely ever happy with what we’ve got?

I consider myself blessed but at the same time, I long for the next view steps in my life. Sometimes I try to bring bits and pieces of the future into the present time, obviously in vain. Every time I try to skip my life ahead, I lose my inner peace and get stressed out. In those moments, I realize time and time again that I’ve tried to do something out of God’s timing.

Waiting… Not easy. Being content with what we’ve got? Difficult.

When was the last time you felt this way? Do you remember the pleasant anticipation before going to college? I bet you can also recall the time when you couldn’t wait for graduation day.

You know what? The job won’t make you happy. Neither does the house or the car. A spouse, money, the new iPhone, the vacation, or whatever else won’t fulfill you. If you’re not satisfied with what you’ve got right now, you won’t be content when you receive what you’ve longed for. There will always be the next shiny thing waiting for you.

I’ve realized that when I don’t cultivate an attitude of gratefulness, I became discontent and complain about my season and daily chores. What would happen if we’d stop wishing for our circumstances to be better or the future to be the present and enjoy our stage of life instead? How about thanking God for what we have?

Being content is a matter of attitude. Life with God is a marathon, not a sprint. Taking shortcuts will lead us nowhere. On the contrary, getting back on the main road is often a humbling experience.

It is our main task to seek God today, live for him, and enjoy his presence. At the right time, he’ll reveal the next step. Over and over again, we need to return to this truth. If God hasn’t shown us the next step, it’s just not time yet.

Read more articles:

How to find true rest

What to do in a season of waiting

10 things to pray while pursuing the one

Dealing with disappointment

Find joy in difficulties

⭐️ Do you want to know how to study the Bible for yourself?
