10 things only Highly Sensitive Christians understand

Highly sensitive people (HSP) process everything more deeply due to a biologically different nervous system. That’s why they get easily overstimulated and exhausted by too much external (noise, light, etc.) and internal (hunger, pain, etc.) sensory input.

Even though being highly sensitive is a normal trait that’s found in 15-20% of the population, those people often feel misunderstood. But here are 10 things that many highly sensitive Christians will understand:

1.You absorb other people’s feelings. Since you are very empathetic, you understand people and share in their emotions. Sometimes you have difficulties distinguish other people’s moods from your own. You are a great listener and make others feel comfortable, understood, and safe in their presence. That’s why you’re prone to look out for them while they’re facing difficult times.

2.You are very conscientious and rarely late for church. Running late to an appointment is a nightmare for you because time pressure causes great distress.

3.Too many responsibilities overwhelm you easily. Serving in different ministries at church besides work, family life, friends, and hobbies makes you frazzled. You say yes to too many things and tend to take on responsibilities you don’t even want to (if you’re being totally honest with yourself). A full to-do list easily overwhelms you because stress and time pressure are types of stimulation.

4.You’re feeling misunderstood. People may have been impatient and judgmental towards you making you feel ‚wrong‘. You may have heard things like ‚You’re overreacting‘ or ‚Toughen up‘. Others don’t understand who God created you to be because they don’t share the same traits and gifts.

5.After church service you prefer to withdraw rather than engage in after church hangouts.

You like going to church to worship God and have fellowship with other believers. But the music, the lights, and the crowd of people overwhelm your nervous system. As a HSP you process sensory inputs more deeply than others do. The church service as well as the conversations before and after the sermon overstimulate you. That’s why you need to spend time to yourself on Sunday afternoons or evenings.

6.You have a heart for people but find it difficult to connect with most of them on a deeper level. You’re longing for authentic relationships and meaningful conversations. Too much small talk makes you tired but deep one-on-one chats enlighten your soul.

7.You’re driven by an internal search for meaning. It’s not a coincidence that you’re prone to spirituality. Since HSP long for meaning in life, they seek after higher things. That’s why the total percentage of HSP in churches is probably higher than the 15-20% that’s presumed in society.

8.You feel worship music and the beauty of creation more intensely than others. Since you feel emotions more deeply, you not only get to experience worship music but life itself to the fullest. You tend to react strongly to all kinds of beauty that’s found in worship music, in a sunset, in nature, and art in general. You also notice subtle things in your environment, and you are able to cherish them.

9.It seems like you want to connect to God on a deeper level than other Christians. You want intimacy and closeness to God as you long for depth in other relationships as well. Your goal is to feel God and understand how he works.

10.You have a complex and vivid inner life. You could reflect for hours on how God works in your life and in the lives of those around you. Overanalyzing different conversations you had throughout the day tends to keep you up at night.
