When dealing with anxiety, the best thing you can do is to pray and meditate on Bible verses. But which passages should you study? While googling ‚Scriptures to calm anxiety‘ you probably find a list of verses that contain the terms ‚fear‘ and ‚anxiety‘. Here’s an example that shows up regularly:
Have I not commanded you? Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged, for the Lord your God will be with you wherever you go. Joshua 1:9
I absolutely love this passage! But reading through verses that tell you ‚not to fear‘ may have the remorse effect, making you feel bad for even experiencing fear while it is indeed the truth that you should not fear.
Because when we see terms like ‚fear‘ or ‚anxiety‘ we concentrate on what we should not do, instead of focusing on what we ought to do: Trusting God. In order to overcome anxiety, we need to study verses that talk about God’s abilities instead of passages that talk about fear.
Keeping his love, his goodness, and his endless possibilities before our eyes is what truly soothes our anxious thoughts. I’m convinced that the following 15 Scriptures will help you to calm your fear and anxiety:
God loves you
See what great love the Father has lavished on us, that we should be called children of God! And that is what we are! The reason the world does not know us is that it did not know him. 1. John 3:1
But God demonstrates his own love for us in this: While we were still sinners, Christ died for us. Romans 5:8
And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him, who have been called according to his purpose. Romans 8:28
God is your strength and your refuge
The Lord will fight for you; you need only to be still. Exodus 14:14
The Lord is my strength and my shield; my heart trusts in him, and he helps me. My heart leaps for joy, and with my song I praise him. Psalm 28:7
It is God who arms me with strength and keeps my way secure. 2. Samuel 22:33
The Lord is with me; he is my helper. I look in triumph on my enemies. Psalm 118:7
God is good and faithful
Surely your goodness and love will follow me all the days of my life, and I will dwell in the house of the Lord forever. Psalm 23:6
Your faithfulness continues through all generations; you established the earth, and it endures. Psalm 119:90
God’s great power
I lift up my eyes to you, to you who sit enthroned in heaven. Psalm 123:1
Now to him who is able to do immeasurably more than all we ask or imagine, according to his power that is at work within us, Ephesians 3:20
Ah, Sovereign Lord, you have made the heavens and the earth by your great power and outstretched arm. Nothing is too hard for you. Jeremiah 32:17
Rest and trust in Him
Yes, my soul, find rest in God; my hope comes from him. Psalm 62:5
Those who trust in the Lord are like Mount Zion, which cannot be shaken but endures forever. Psalm 125:1
“But blessed is the one who trusts in the Lord, whose confidence is in him. They will be like a tree planted by the water that sends out its roots by the stream. It does not fear when heat comes; its leaves are always green. It has no worries in a year of drought and never fails to bear fruit.” Jeremiah 17:7-8
My advice? Write these verses on notecards and keep them with you to reflect on them throughout the day.
Let’s say a prayer that focuses on God’s resources and his love for us: God, I know that you’re capable beyond measure. Even though I sometimes don’t understand why things happen or don’t happen, I decide to trust you. You are good and faithful, Lord. You love me and I know that you’ll make everything work together for my good. Please give me wisdom on how to cope with my situation. Fill my heart with love, hope, joy, and peace. I know that you’re always with me. You’re my refuge and my strength as I dwell in your unfailing love. Thanks for your help. In Jesus’ name, amen.
