In today’s world, most people are full of insecurities. Some of us carry the hurt of our past in our hearts. We don’t feel like we measure up to society’s standards. There are thoughts like ‚I’m not good enough and won’t amount to anything.’ We view ourselves through a lens of hurt and rejection.
The battle to overcome insecurities takes place in our minds. Paul tells us that the fight is spiritual:
For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the powers of this dark world and against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms. Ephesians 6:12
That’s where prayer comes in. We need God’s power to overcome whatever is hindering us from being fully confident in him and ourselves. Prayer should always be our first approach to every situation.
And pray in the Spirit on all occasions with all kinds of prayers and requests. With this in mind, be alert and always keep on praying for all the Lord’s people. Ephesians 6:18
Let’s get into the 10 prayers that will help you overcome your insecurities:
1. Help me to see myself as you see me.
God loves you unconditionally. He even gave his son for you:
For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life. John 3:16
Sometimes we know in our mind that God loves us, but we have troubles to believe it with our whole hearts. Pray this as often as possible, that God’s love overtakes your heart.
2. Show me how to love and accept myself.
We are not only called to love God and our neighbors, but ourselves as well:
Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind and with all your strength.’The second is this: ‘Love your neighbor as yourself.’ There is no commandment greater than these.” Mark 12:30-31
You may have difficulties to accept your weaknesses, your personality, your looks or whatever else. God can give you tools and strategies that will help you discover how amazing you are. Trust that God will help you to love yourself over time. Be patient with the process.
3. Lead me to people who have my best interests at heart.
There may be some people in your life that you need to let go of. Not everyone in your life is supposed to stay there. This may sound harsh but our friends and family influence us one way or another. That’s why we need to surround ourselves with genuine and loyal people.
4. Give me the courage to stand up for myself.
Many Christians think they aren’t supposed to have needs and always think about others first. While it’s important to serve others, we need to take care for ourselves as well. This includes voicing our opinions and standing up for our values.
5. Reveal to me where my insecurities come from.
Some of our insecurities have their roots in the past. How your parents, relatives, friends and even strangers treated you formed your self image. Another factor is today’s culture and its standards. We have particular images in mind of what a beautiful person should look like and society’s urge that we need to strive for success and happiness is a given. Maybe you feel like falling short on the world’s standards. Wherever your insecurities come from, God will reveal what is hidden to you if you keep on praying this prayer.
For there is nothing hidden that will not be disclosed, and nothing concealed that will not be known or brought out into the open. Luke 8:17
6. Help me to get past the hurt and rejection I experienced in my past.
This is huge. As Christians we are new creatures:
Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, the new creation has come: The old has gone, the new is here! 2. Corinthians 5:17
You can’t live in the fullness of what Christ died for you to have without letting go of your past. If you want to be free and pursue the things God has for your life, you need to reconcile yourself with your past.
7. Help me to be quick to forgive.
When you don’t forgive, your heart gets hardened. You become frustrated and won’t have peace of mind. Forgiveness isn’t just for the other person, but also for yourself. Make yourself a favor and forgive to be free.
8. Show me which steps I need to take to move forward.
Maybe you need to let go of some people in your life, some memories, destructive habits, etc. God knows what hinders you from being fully confident in who you are. Trust him and obey as he leads you.
9. Help me to build my identity in you alone.
So often we derive our worth from our achievements, how other people view us, our education, and so on. But these things can fall apart in an instance and you’re left with nothing. If you base your worth on anything else but God, you live in bondage. Start identifying yourself as a dearly loved child of God.
10. Show me my strengths and help me to develop them.
Instead of focusing on our weaknesses, let’s focus on our strengths. Doing things we’re good at is much more enjoyable. If you don’t think there’s anything you exceed at, you may have some raw hidden strengths that need some development. God will reveal them to you and help you grow in your areas of strength.
Never forget that we live in a fallen world. The enemy is constantly trying to attack you in areas you’re insecure. Don’t let yourself be intimidated if he’s reminding you of your old wounds. Know that the victory is won on the cross and that your past and sin don’t have any power over you:
O death, where is your victory? O death, where is your sting?” For sin is the sting that results in death, and the law gives sin its power. But thank God! He gives us victory over sin and death through our Lord Jesus Christ. 1. Corinthians 15:55-57
