Thoughts about peace

God promises us His peace in countless places in the Bible. He wants us to experience inner peace and to live in harmony with one another. Jesus himself is even called the Prince of Peace:

For to us a child is born, to us a son is given, and the government will be on his shoulders. And he will be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace. Isaiah 9:6

When we think about peace, we must begin at the very source: God and thus our relationship with Him. Jesus made peace between us and God:

Therefore, since we have been justified through faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ, Romans 5:1

How could we experience real peace with our fellow human beings and ourselves if we do not have peace with God? Our relationship with God determines how we live our lives and vice versa. As believers, we must stand firm in the knowledge that we truly have peace with God. NOTHING is standing between Him and us anymore because Jesus paid the price. Through faith, you obtain peace with God.

Do you live your life trusting that there is peace between you and God? Or are you troubled by the unpleasant feelings of guilt? When are there too many sins? Is God’s grace really big enough?

I think many Christians do not carry the deep awareness in their hearts that they can really have peace with God. Not because of their own deeds, but through the death and resurrection of Christ alone. (I recommend meditating on Bible passages that underline our righteousness through faith in Christ: Romans 1:17 / Romans 3 + 4 / 2 Corinthians 5:21, etc.).

Peace with God is the foundation for many things concerning our walk with God, including peace with yourself and other people.

Let the peace of Christ rule in your hearts, since as members of one body you were called to peace. And be thankful. Colossians 3:15

Paul repeatedly urges the church to unite in his letters. He wants us to live in peace among each other and thus follow Christ’s example.

We can experience peace not only in relationships but also inwardly. However, to experience this inner peace, we have to stick to one demand:

Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus. Philippians 4:6-7

Jesus himself also spoke to his disciples about inner peace:

Peace I leave with you; my peace I give you. I do not give to you as the world gives. Do not let your hearts be troubled and do not be afraid. John 14:27

And again we see the connection between not worrying and inner peace. Sometimes it is difficult not to worry. I recommend meditating on Bible verses to counter anxious thoughts; about worry (Philippians 4:6-7 / Matthew 6:25 + 34 / 1 Peter 5:7) and anxiety (Joshua 1:9 / Psalm 46:2-3 / Psalm 27:1). Thus, bit by bit, we train ourselves out of the habit of worrying and learn to trust in God. In this process, the peace of Christ spreads more and more in our hearts.

God’s peace is accessible to all of us. However, we must seek it, even pursue it (Hebrews 12:14).

Peace in the world begins with the relationship between man and God. How could one have true peace if one is not walking with God? As we can observe in world events, there are indeed many people who do not want peace at all. Because God loves us human beings and love requires free will, God does not force peace upon anyone.

Therefore, what we can do is pray continuously for peace and take hold of what we have in our hands: Our peace with God, peace with our fellow human beings, and inner peace. We can take these experiences of peace out into the world, accompanied by prayer that other people may make contact with the God of peace.

The God of peace be with you all. Amen. Romans 15:33
