Our daughter’s favorite word at the moment is „more“. When we’re outside and she sees a few of the same kind she names them „more car“ „more man“ „more snow“ and so on. After eating a snack, she yells „more, more“.
I wonder how many times we say „more“. And I’m not talking about the words we speak out loud. What about our hearts cry for more? How many „more“ do we need until it’s enough for us? How much more do we need to be content?
I remember when I waited to study Theology. And I also recall the time when I wanted my studies to end. We usually wait for relationships, things, jobs, etc. Have you ever thought: “When I get married, I’ll be happy. When I get a better job, I’ll be happy. When I have children, then I’ll be happy.” But after getting them, there are other things we long and wait for.
My question to you is: Are you grateful for what you have or are you constantly longing for more? Observe your thoughts today: Is your mind focused on things you don’t have or on the things you do have? Do you compare your life to others and what they have?
Confession: There have been times in my life when I tried to push God’s timing. “Lord, I want it NOW. Help me to get it now.” This attitude brought me so much pain and sorrow. I could have saved myself much distress if I had just trusted God and enjoyed the waiting period.
I can guarantee you, a few weeks after you’ve got your desired object or person, there’s something else you’ll be longing for. So, when does it end? When you decide to be content with what you have. Happiness is a choice.
Being content has little to do with your circumstances but everything with your heart. The emptiness you’re feeling and the strive for more is because you’ve nourished an attitude of discontentment.
But the Bible tells us that we can become a new person by changing our thought patterns.
Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God’s will is—his good, pleasing and perfect will. Romans 12:2
How do you change your attitude to be satisfied and content with where you’re at?
1.Pray. Ask the Holy Spirit to help you uncover lies and unhealthy thought patterns. Pray that he leads you into full truth:
But when he, the Spirit of truth, comes, he will guide you into all the truth. He will not speak on his own; he will speak only what he hears, and he will tell you what is yet to come. John 16:13
2.Be grateful for what you already have
Give thanks in all circumstances; for this is God’s will for you in Christ Jesus. 1 Thessalonians 5:18
3.Stop comparing yourself to others and stop longing for what they have.
“You shall not covet your neighbor’s house. You shall not covet your neighbor’s wife, or his male or female servant, his ox or donkey, or anything that belongs to your neighbor.” Exodus 20:17
4.Know that more money won’t make you happy.
Whoever loves money never has enough; whoever loves wealth is never satisfied with their income. This too is meaningless. Ecclesiastes 5:10
But godliness with contentment is great gain. 1. Timothy 6:6
5.Seek first God’s kingdom.
But seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well. Matthew 6:33
6.Trust God’s timing. If something is for you, God will bring it to you in his timing and in his ways. If not, he will get you something better. In both cases, accept the season you’re in and know that there will come another time.
There is a time for everything, and a season for every activity under the heavens: Ecclesiastes 3:1
