Your perception of God determines how you live your life

We feel secure when we believe that God loves us and has our back. When we don’t experience this intimacy with our heavenly Father, the whole world seems daunting to us. But when we walk closely with God knowing that he cares for us, we are able to take steps by faith. We become courageous and face our battles head-on.

Our perception of God shapes our thoughts, decisions, and actions. Ultimately, how we view God determines how we live our life.

If you perceive God as the sweet grandpa who grants your every wish, you get angry when he has other plans.

If you perceive God as wrathful and being out there to get you, you live in constant fear of making a mistake.

How do you view God? And what do you think that he thinks about you?

Who is God?

God is love:

Whoever does not love does not know God, because God is love. 1. John 4:8

You may know the famous passage in 1. Corinthians 13:4- 7 where Paul describes love. When it says that God is love, it means that he’s everything Paul lists in that passage. As an exercise, I replaced the word ‘love’ with ‘God’ in the following verses:

God is patient, God is kind. He does not envy, he does not boast, he is not proud. He does not dishonor others, he is not self-seeking, he is not easily angered, he keeps no record of wrongs. God does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth. He always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres. 1. Corinthians 13:4-7

God is gracious, righteous, and full of compassion:

The LORD is gracious and righteous; our God is full of compassion. Psalm 116:5

God is faithful:

Your love, Lord, reaches to the heavens, your faithfulness to the skies. Psalm 36:5

God is good:

Taste and see that the Lord is good; blessed is the one who takes refuge in him. Psalm 34:8

If you want to know who God really is, you have to renew your mind with Scripture. Do you want to know more about his character? Study the Gospels and learn about who Jesus is:

If you really know me, you will know my Father as well. From now on, you do know him and have seen him. John 14:7

Look to Jesus and see who God is. Study the Bible to get to know God.

What does God think about YOU?

God loves you so much that Jesus died for you:

For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life. John 3:16

You are his dearly loved child:

See what kind of love the Father has given to us, that we should be called children of God; and so we are. The reason why the world does not know us is that it did not know him. 1. John 3:1

You are a COMPLETELY new person in Christ:

Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation. The old has passed away; behold, the new has come. 2. Corinthians 5:17

God is NOT mad at you:

There is therefore now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus. Romans 8:1

God didn’t send Jesus to condemn you, but to show you his love:

For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but in order that the world might be saved through him. John 3:17

There are countless passages that talk about how God sees us. It is so important that we align ourselves with the truth and lay down every false perception we have of God. Only then can we abide in a close and intimate relationship with our heavenly Father knowing that he loves and carries us through everything.

When we have a healthy understanding of who God is and how he views us, we thrive.

This is so good and helpful as usual, Madeleine! I love your point about renewing our minds with Scripture because we’re so influenced by culture, by movies, by books, etc. that we often don’t have a clear perception of who God really is and it’s crucial we start with His Word! Thank you for another great post, my friend!
