10 prayers for godly friendships

No matter if you’re looking for some new godly friends or want to nourish and maintain your current friendships, the following 10 prayers will make your friendships flourish.

1. Make me a good friend.

Everyone wants to have amazing friends. You probably want loyal people in your life who are there for you when times get tough. Someone who’s got your back no matter what. A friend that’s helpful and always has an open ear is what most of us are looking for. Picture your perfect friend and now ask yourself: Are YOU being this friend to somebody else? Are you what you’re looking for in a friendship? If you want to have great friends, become an amazing friend yourself.

2. Heal me from the hurt of rejection.

All of us experience rejection from people. It is important that we don’t let our hearts grow bitter. Hurting people tend to isolate themselves. This doesn’t necessarily mean that you lock yourself up in your room. In fact, you can be around people all the time but have high walls around your heart that you stay lonely on the inside. True, deep and meaningful connections can only develop if your heart is healed. Ask God whom you need to forgive and let him heal and restore your heart.

Bear with each other and forgive one another if any of you has a grievance against someone. Forgive as the Lord forgave you. Colossians 3:13

3. Help me to be vulnerable and let people in.

Ask God to prepare your heart to truly open up for people. Getting closer to someone is always a risk. But to build thriving friendships, we need to show ourselves as who we really are with all our strengths and weaknesses.

4. Use my friendships to grow closer to you, God.

Community should always draw us closer to the heart of God. Healthy friends help each other to develop into mature Christians.

Listen to advice and accept discipline, and at the end you will be counted among the wise. Proverbs 19:20

5. Show me how to serve and bless my friends.

Friendship and servanthood are closely connected. Jesus himself came to serve:

For even the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many.” Mark 10:45

We should follow his example and serve our friends. But be careful to distinguish between serving and be taken advantage of. There are people who always take but never give. Ask for wisdom to see if someone just wants to use you or is really a friend in need.

6. Put my name on the mind of the right people.

Making new friends can be tough. But the most intimate friendships are the ones that God introduces. Pray that God chooses some new friends for you and that he will place you in the heart of those people.

7. Lead me to the right church and help me built a community.

The best place to look for godly friendships is in a church. If you haven’t found the church where you feel like God’s wants you to be, keep praying and searching. If you already are in an amazing church, pray for opportunities to build friendships. Ask God in which ministry you should serve, which Bible study group you should join, and with whom you should connect over a cup of coffee during the week.

8. Show me which friendship to let go of.

Not every person in your life is a friend for life. Some people are with us for a time period while others weren’t supposed to be friends with us in the first place. Ask God to remove the people out of your life that are toxic and that are only looking for their own gain. Pray for wisdom to make the right decision.

Do not be misled: “Bad company corrupts good character.” 1. Corinthians 15:33

9. Show me who to spend more time with.

You probably have some acquaintances that you’ve never come around to start a real friendship with. Ask God to reveal the people he wants you to spend more time with and connect on a deeper level.

Walk with the wise and become wise, for a companion of fools suffers harm. Proverbs 13:20

10. Help me overcome people pleasing and insecurities.

When you are trying to please people, you can’t be fully honest in your friendships. How can you have an honest conversation with your friends, telling them they might be wrong and at the same time try to please them? Prayer is the first thing to do while trying to build and maintaining godly friendships. But walking in love is just as important as praying. Let’s read some advice at last:

Therefore, as God’s chosen people, holy and dearly loved, clothe yourselves with compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness and patience.Bear with each other and forgive one another if any of you has a grievance against someone. Forgive as the Lord forgave you.And over all these virtues put on love, which binds them all together in perfect unity. Colossians 3:12-14
